How to Choose the Right Medium Duty Caster for Your Application
Ergonomic considerations are always top of mind. As the workforce ages and becomes heavier, it becomes more susceptible to workplace injuries. That's why employers seek tools and equipment, such as casters and wheels, to reduce stress on joints, prevent back injuries, and better accommodate staff.Wheel size is the single biggest factor in rollability. Larger wheels are easier to push or pull under load. Even when wheel capacity well exceeds what the load requires, larger diameters help keep workers safe.
What's the weight of the load plus the cart, trailer or AGV? What about the possibility of overload, shock loading, abuse or poor floor conditions? It may seem obvious to divide the maximum load weight by four (or however many casters or wheels), but this can lead to heavy miscalculations. Why? Because most loads don't maintain an even weight across the length and width of the vehicle. An off-center load could overload even the most durable medium duty caster.
Shock loading occurs when a load is dropped onto the trailer. Or when a rig rolls over a bump, like a concrete joint, door jam, dock plate or leveler. In some cases, shock loading can force a wheel to bear more than three times the weight of the load.Uneven floors, slopes, ramps or inclines can cause shock loading when one or more wheels lose contact with the floor. In these cases, the remaining wheels must carry the entire load.
Where's it rolling? Environmental conditions must be considered when choosing a medium duty caster. Extremely hot or cold applications may require special caster and wheel materials, and bearing lubricants, to withstand the conditions.
Abuse takes a toll on medium duty caster. We like to believe that everyone uses them as intended, but we also understand that's not always the reality. Sometimes workers move too quickly, take short cuts, or even take out frustrations on them. Keep this in mind when selecting equipment.
Types of Medium Duty Caster Wheels in Terms of Their Material
Rubber caster wheels
Rubber is popular for many types of applications. For caster wheels, rubber boasts excellent longevity owing to its ability to compress and bend. The elasticity also makes rubber easier on floors. The elasticity of rubber medium duty caster wheels also provides decent load-bearing capacities. Rubber casters are suitable for most heavy pieces of equipment, especially if the casters come in sets of more than four.
Polyurethane casters
Polyurethane casters are some of the most common types of casters on the market today. Industrial grade polyurethane casters offer the right balance between heavy-duty load-bearing and surface protection. What adds to the load-bearing capacity of polyurethane casters is their ability to vibrate. The oscillatory properties of polyurethane minimize rigidity, allowing wheels to absorb force.

Nylon casters
Over the years, nylon wheel medium duty caster have grown in popularity due to their abrasion resistance on surfaces. Providing excellent traction for movement, nylon casters are easier on your floors. In addition, you can burden these casters with a fair amount of load.
Aluminum medium duty caster
Lightweight and resilient, aluminum medium duty caster wheels offer an ideal balance of mobility and weight-bearing. Aluminum casters, for this reason, are a popular option for pneumatic caster wheels.Aluminum is best for when you are moving lighter pieces of equipment at higher volumes. If you prefer better load-bearing, polyurethane and cast iron caster wheels are still better choices.
How to choose the right size Medium Duty Caster
Obtain top plate measurements
The area where the medium duty caster attaches to carts or racks is known as the top plate, and it’s important to obtain the right measurements. Fortunately, this is simple – just accurately measure the length and width of the plate and write these measurements down.
Note the bolt holes
Much like it's important to match the lug pattern on a wheel for your automobile, it's vital to ensure that the medium duty caster you choose have the same bolt hole pattern as the ones that exist on your cart or rack. To get these measurements, all you have to do is measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the other both lengthwise and width-wise. Note these measurements alongside your top plate measurements.
Measure the size of the wheel
Measuring the actual medium duty caster wheel is a bit more complicated, but it is easily done. You will need to measure both the diameter and the width of the existing wheel in order to make the right purchase decisions. To measure the diameter, lay the wheel flat on its side and measure from one side to the other. To measure the width, do the opposite – measure the wheel while it is upright and attached to the cart or rack from one outer edge to the other. Write these measurements down, as well.
Determine the swivel radius
It's also important for you to measure the swivel radius of your existing medium duty caster since this gives you an idea of the amount of clearance you will need for the wheel to swivel as it should. Ideally, the caster should be able to swivel a full 360 degrees. To determine this measurement, lay the caster down on its side again and measure from the back edge of the wheel to the very center of the kingpin. You can use a straightedge against the wheel face to make it simpler, too. Just look at the point where your tape measure meets the straight edge to get your measurement.
Measure the total caster assembly height
Last, but most certainly not least, you will need to determine the total height of the entire medium duty caster assembly from the ground to the top of the top plate. This is simple enough and requires you to lie the entire assembly on its side and taking the appropriate measurement. Write these numbers down alongside the rest and have them handy as you research the various caster styles available to you.
How To Take Care Of Your Medium Duty Caster Wheels
Start with the right medium duty caster wheel
It's hard to properly care for your medium duty caster if you've chosen the wrong ones from the start. For example, if you will need to roll carts over uneven surfaces, but you choose a caster that cannot absorb shock appropriately, that caster will not last as long as it could. The very best way to take care of caster wheels involves installing the right wheels in the first place. Consider the weight of the load, environmental factors, and more when purchasing new casters, and if needed, talk to a professional who can guide you in the right direction based on your needs and your budget.
Lubricate when necessary
One of the most important things you can do to properly care for your medium duty caster wheels is to lubricate them as needed. This helps to ensure that each caster on each cart spins at the same rate. When this happens, no undue stress is put on any of the casters, which helps extend their lifespan and makes them safer all at the same time. Most of the time, if you are using your casters in a clean environment, you can use a traditional gel-based lubricant. However, if you are using your casters in an area where there is a large amount of dust and debris, you may want to consider a dry lubricant. These are designed to keep the debris in the environment out of the caster.
Keep floors clean
Though it's true that much of maintaining medium duty caster wheels comes down to the wheels themselves, the truth is that keeping your floors clean is important, too. After all, the less debris on the floor, and the fewer the obstacles for the caster wheels to encounter, the longer they will last. Sweeping floors regularly is vital to a long-lasting caster, and if you will be using your casters in areas where debris, moisture, heat, cold, chemicals, or other hazards might exist, be sure that you are purchasing the right caster wheel in the first place. Many have built-in features designed to help them last longer in these scenarios.
Make repairs as needed
Finally, should a medium duty caster wheel stop rolling smoothly, or should one stop rolling altogether, it's important to make timely repairs. One caster that is not working as it should can impact the other three (or more) on the cart, thus shortening their lifespans, as well. Often, repairing or even replacing a single caster is cost-effective and quick. Waiting until all of the casters have been damaged ends up costing more in the long run, and it can create catastrophe in the workplace if an employee is injured due to a failed caster.

Metal
With the highest capacity and tensile strength, these light duty casters are popular for high heat applications. For heavy applications metal wheels, including steel and cast iron, are one of the most popular options. They provide easy rolling, but do not offer floor protection on soft flooring. Load capacities can be very high with these wheels.
Rubber
Another very common material, these long wearing light duty casters are widely used on industrial equipment and can be molded onto iron, aluminum or plastic centres. This application is called Mold-on rubber and provides the soft tread of rubber with the hard backing of the wheel centre.
Polyurethane
Carrying higher loads than rubber, and also outlasting it, they offer protection for your floor and quiet operation. Polyurethane is liquid cast onto cast iron, aluminum or forged steel centres.
Nylon/Plastic
For easy rolling, chemical resistance and high capacity these casters can’t be beat. The plastic composition allows these to be used where other wheel materials would be worn away by harsh chemicals. They include Nylon, Phenolic or Polyolefin materials and can have very high load capacities.
Pneumatic/Solid/Semi
These light duty casters work well on rough and uneven surfaces and provide the best cushioning in these terrains. Often offering larger wheel diameters for easier, rolling these are the preferred wheel type of outdoor applications on soft surfaces such as grass. They turn quietly and protect softer floors and outdoor surfaces.
